Community Learning
GOALS
This unit should enable students to: • demonstrate skills in initiating, negotiating, and planning individually challenging, achievable outcomes • demonstrate the application of appropriate practical knowledge, skills and processes • identify and use a variety of means of communication to clarify and convey ideas and information • demonstrate skills in language for a variety of purposes • apply skills, knowledge, and understanding in a major project based on the use of effective communication skills. CONTENT SUMMARY Activities that fall into this category are likely to be about using language to communicate, (e.g. improving English literacy, learning Auslan, writing, presenting to an audience, developing skills in ICT, raising awareness of body language). Each student will: · work with teachers to plan, develop and write an individual assessment contract, which is challenging and achievable for each student · engage in learning activities outside school as well as at school · provide appropriate documentation that records their planning and organisation, progress, and reflection on their learning · contact a community expert or organisation(s) to arrange an activity/research project/work experience related to language skills Some examples of activities are: • developing word processing skills e.g. touch-typing programs • preparing a brochure • writing e-portfolios • developing presentation skills e.g. powerpoint • learning discussion/debate skills • interpreting and/or creating a technical manual e.g. how to manual • preparing a presentation for an audience • conducting an oral history • interpersonal communication • writing articles for the school magazine • writing a newspaper broadsheet for a conference • interviewing and recording people in the local community about their experiences • writing poetry or stories • providing an information processing service for a community organisation. Assessment Criteria The following criteria for assessment and reporting of student achievement are a focus for assessment and reporting in this course. Criteria are the essential qualities which teachers look for in student work. Over this course, these criteria will be used by teachers to assess students’ performance, however not all of them need to be used on each task. Assessment criteria will be used holistically on a given task and in determining the Unit Grade. Students will be assessed on the degree to which they demonstrate:
